General Questions

Sikia Foundation is a nonprofit organization based in Jinja, Uganda, committed to empowering deaf individuals through education, vocational training, advocacy, and economic support. It was born out of the success of Sikia Café—Uganda’s first café run entirely by deaf staff.

We primarily serve the deaf community, including youth, women, children, and adults. We also support families, communities, and institutions working toward inclusion and equal opportunities.

We are one of the few organizations in Uganda with a holistic, deaf-centered approach. Our programs are designed by and for the deaf, and we prioritize dignity, community integration, and long-term empowerment over charity models.

We offer:

  • Vocational training (e.g., crafts, hospitality, soap-making)

  • Education support and scholarships

  • Deaf advocacy and rights awareness

  • Research and innovation projects

  • Drama and performing arts through our Sikia Drama Club

Absolutely! We encourage hearing allies, interpreters, volunteers, advocates, and professionals to support our work through collaboration, donations, or mentorship opportunities.

Sikia Café is our flagship social enterprise. It employs deaf youth and helps challenge stereotypes. It also serves as a training ground and inspiration for our broader Foundation programs.

While it’s not our core service, we collaborate with partners to organize sign language awareness and basic training workshops—especially for schools, employers, and families of deaf persons.

Yes, most of our core programs like training, advocacy, and education support are free for beneficiaries, thanks to donors and partner contributions.
