The Sikia Foundation, born out of the success of Sikia Café, is a centre of hope and opportunity for the deaf community in Uganda. Founded in 2024 and headquartered in Jinja, Eastern Uganda, this not-for-profit organization is dedicated to empowering deaf individuals, both women and men, to live fulfilling lives marked by dignity and respect.
Central to the Foundation’s mission is the vision of a world where equality for deaf people flourishes. This vision reflects a commitment to breaking down barriers and creating inclusive spaces where deaf individuals can thrive on par with their hearing counterparts.
At the heart of Sikia Foundation’s inception lies Sikia Café, a pioneering establishment in Uganda. What sets Sikia Café apart is not only its distinction as the country’s sole café exclusively staffed by deaf waiters and waitresses, but also its role as a catalyst for social change.
By providing employment opportunities to over 100 deaf individuals, Sikia Café has not only improved their livelihoods but also shattered stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding the capabilities of deaf individuals in the workplace.
The overwhelming demand for job opportunities at Sikia Café highlighted the stark reality of limited opportunities available to the deaf community in Uganda. In response to this pressing need, Sikia Foundation emerged as a natural extension of Sikia Café’s ethos, aiming to serve as a hub for skill development, talent enhancement, and social and economic empowerment for the deaf.
Through its diverse programs and initiatives, Sikia Foundation seeks to bridge the gap between the deaf community and the broader social and economic landscape. Whether through vocational training, educational scholarships, or advocacy efforts, the Foundation is committed to equipping deaf individuals with the tools and resources they need to succeed.
By nurturing talent, fostering community, and advocating for systemic change, Sikia Foundation is not only transforming the lives of individual deaf individuals but also contributing to a more inclusive and equitable society. In doing so, it embodies the spirit of empowerment, resilience, and hope that defines the deaf community’s journey towards equality and acceptance.
A society where deaf individuals are empowered, respected, and fully integrated into all aspects of community life.
To create lasting change and build a more equitable and inclusive society for deaf persons everywhere.Core Values
